How can I turn a possible direction into a one-week experiment?

Treat one week as a review boundary, not a deadline for proving that a direction is right. Choose one important uncertainty, design the smallest real-world action that could reduce it, decide what you will observe, cap the time, cost, exposure, and effect on other people, and schedule a review on day seven. Use the result to stop, adapt, repeat, or take one larger step. A useful experiment produces evidence for the next decision; it does not promise certainty.

Use a week to learn, not to prove

A one-week experiment is useful when a direction is plausible but one important assumption remains uncertain. The UK government's Test and Learn guidance recommends focusing early tests on critical uncertainties, using small-scale real-world trials, collecting proportionate evidence, and agreeing decision criteria in advance.

That guidance does not establish seven days as a universal ideal. For a personal direction experiment, a week is simply a short, visible review boundary. The test should answer a narrow question such as whether you will use a skill repeatedly, whether a routine fits your actual schedule, or whether a conversation reveals information you need. It should not be used to claim that a career, relationship, health choice, or other consequential commitment has been proven right.

The result is not “this direction is correct.” The result is “this is what happened, and here is what I will do next.”

Build the WEEK card

WEEK is a Forever Free Compass framework, not an external research finding. Write one concrete answer for each part before the experiment starts.

  1. Wonder: name one assumption whose answer would materially change your next decision.
  2. Experiment: choose one real-world action you can complete or repeat during seven days, then cap time, money, visibility, access, and effects on others.
  3. Evidence: decide in advance what you will observe or save, such as a completed artifact, time log, response, note, or direct feedback.
  4. Keep or change: schedule a day-seven review and choose among stop, adapt, repeat, or expand.

Make the action observable and feasible

CDC guidance describes practical objectives as specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Applied carefully here, those features help replace a vague instruction such as “explore design” with an inspectable action such as “complete two one-hour interface critiques by Friday and save the notes.”

The evidence does not need to be a score. A saved draft, a calendar record, notes about friction, or feedback from an informed person may be more useful than a number. Decide what counts before you see the result so that an uncomfortable outcome is not quietly redefined as success.

Give the experiment a start cue

National Cancer Institute-hosted guidance describes implementation intentions as if-then plans that connect a situational cue with a goal-directed response. Use that structure only after you have chosen the experiment: “If it is Tuesday at 6 p.m., then I will begin the first 60-minute practice session at my desk.”

An if-then plan can make the start condition explicit, but it does not make the underlying direction wise or guarantee follow-through. Keep the response feasible, connect it to the chosen experiment, and revise the setup if the cue never occurs in real life.

Keep the experiment reversible

Stanford d.school describes prototypes as tools for investigating ideas and exploring what could come next, including simple no-build approaches. A direction experiment can follow the same learning logic: create enough reality to learn without constructing the full commitment.

Do not use a one-week experiment to bypass consent, safety rules, professional duties, legal requirements, confidentiality, or significant financial consequences. If the action affects another person's rights, responsibilities, information, or wellbeing, involve them and obtain appropriate agreement. For health, legal, financial, or immediate-safety decisions, use qualified guidance rather than treating a personal trial as proof.

Bound the downside before you begin. If you cannot describe a credible stop condition and acceptable recovery path, redesign the experiment.

Review the evidence on day seven

Compare what happened with the evidence rule you wrote at the start. Record what was completed, what remained uncertain, what surprised you, and what the test could not show. Mixed or negative evidence is still useful when it changes the next decision.

Stop when the direction no longer fits the relevant value or the downside cannot stay bounded. Adapt when the question was useful but the action or context was poorly designed. Repeat only when another short run could reduce the same uncertainty. Expand by one step when the evidence supports doing more and the next commitment remains proportionate.
